Is it really true that 'The Castle of Otranto' is the first gothic novel?
I'm a big fan of Lovecraft & Poe. I'm intrigued. -

Re: Honestly
Tue, October 21, 2003 - 9:13 AMIt is generally accepted to be the first.
honestly, there are whole websites devoted to this. The best is at:
www.litgothic.com
You can probably find a copy of Otranto to read. Honestly, it's boring as fuck. -

Re: Honestly
Sun, February 8, 2004 - 8:34 PMI did not see it as a boring read, but perhaps that is because I am majoring in literature. It is a rare few that can read period works while keeping the glaze from their eyes however.
What else have you read? -

Re: Honestly
Tue, April 13, 2004 - 5:24 PMi read it a few years ago, found it a bit hard going....but it's probably the sort of thing that would benefit from a second read, now there's a few more years on me! -

Re: Honestly
Tue, April 13, 2004 - 5:33 PMSometimes I find that when I read somthing for a second time, I find little hidden parts that make either more sense...or just stick out more.
I've been told that my level of interest in literature is great for my age but it makes a stale bathroom read for visitors.
